This Makes Me Happy!

But then they make me grumpy with this line: The trial provided a glimpse into a growing U.S. problem of domestic workers exploited in slave-like conditions.
Let's be clear about something. The problem is one of culture. Not American culture, but the culture of those who have immigrated to the U.S. from countries where it is not only common for middle class households to have entire staffs of "help" but where it is also not unusual to hold people in perpetual servitude or even de facto slavery.

I suspect that's greatly true. There are even foreigners I know who I personally like and admire, but I realize they also come from countries where it's perfectly "okay" to treat the servants that way (usually not as bad as in this case....but still...) It's greatly a cultural thing.
When I was in college there was student from Saudi Arabia who had a live-in maid that worked for his family. She was from the Philippines. He treated her like a dog and he was totally confused whenever people expressed any negative thoughts about it.
And he's from one of the "friendly" countries.
True..Patrick. Imagine the servant-situation if his college acquaintance had been from unfriendly Iran! Probably would have kept her in a cage.
